A clutter-free, organized bedroom can do wonders for your peace of mind and overall well-being. If you’re struggling with a cramped, messy space, don’t worry—there are simple and effective ways to help you maximize your room’s potential. In this post, we’ll share some easy-to-follow hacks that will transform your bedroom into a spacious and serene space.
Let’s get started!
Get Rid of Clutter and Old Items
Everything you think is sentimental but you’re not using, put in storage (preferably out of the room and in a single bin in the attic). We tend to have a lot of stuff that can probably go into a storage box somewhere else in your home if we don’t want to donate or toss it. Clean out/go through your clothes in your closet and put your drawers in your closet.
Sometimes having an organized bedroom that isn’t stressful comes from just having less.
Simplify Your Storage
Before you buy any storage containers or furniture, declutter your space. Use all your built-in storage like closets, cabinets, and shelves first. If you still need more space, then look for extra storage like shelves or furniture. But always start with what you have.
When I was living in my old house, I got rid of my bedroom dresser, dressers in the guest rooms, and many small tables just by using built-in storage and getting rid of 90% of my stuff. Now, I try to keep each room with only the necessary furniture.
Closed Storage Is the Way to Go
If you don’t want to put anything into storage, try putting your bed in the corner by the window instead of the middle of the room and rotate it so the foot of the bed faces your closet. This can open up more floor space and make the room feel bigger.
Place a stylish storage ottoman at the foot of your bed
It gives you extra seating and more space to store shoes, clothes, and other items. The best storage ottomans keep your extras out of sight while still looking good. This one does just that, with a comfy outside and a roomy inside for spare sheets, pillows, clothes, and more.
I love the Furniture Storage Ottoman Bench.
Be Intentional With What You Want to Display
To make your space less cluttered, keep only what you really use and love. Go through your things regularly and get rid of anything that doesn’t match your current interests or hasn’t been used in the last 30 days. Display items that make you happy and reflect who you are, like family photos or souvenirs. I like to follow the Marie Kondo technique, keeping things that “spark joy” and thank items before letting them go. This makes your space more organized, easier to clean, and more pleasant to live in.
Utilize Unused Space
Where is there space that isn’t being utilized? High shelving is a favorite, as is space behind doors and under furniture. Even very slim spaces can be used for something if you’re creative enough. For example, add hooks behind the door for bags or scarves, or use under-bed storage boxes for shoes and seasonal clothing.
Maximize Vertical Space
Install shelves or cabinets high up on the walls to store items you don’t need daily. This keeps them out of sight but still accessible. Use tall bookcases or shelving units to take advantage of vertical space and keep the floor area clear.
Use Multi-Functional Furniture
Invest in furniture that serves more than one purpose. A bed with drawers underneath, a bench with storage inside, or a desk that doubles as a vanity can save space and reduce the need for additional furniture.
Some other handy bedroom furniture pieces that can also store stuff include bed headboards, bed frame with drawers and trunks that you can place at the foot of your bed.
Have a Daily Ten Minutes Cleaning Session
Taking just ten minutes each day to tidy up your bedroom can make a big difference. It’s a quick and easy way to keep things organized and prevent stuff from piling up. During that time, you can fold clothes, put things back where they belong, and make sure everything looks neat.
Doing this regularly helps you stay on top of things without feeling overwhelmed. It keeps your bedroom in good shape and makes it easier to find what you need.
How to Arrange Clothes in a Bedroom?
I’m a clothes tosser (not proud of this habit!) and folding and using dressers just isn’t my thing. With my small closet unable to accommodate everything on hangers, I had to find an alternative.
So, I opted for a cube shelving unit with small bins instead. I organized the bins based on what I typically reach for when getting dressed. Now, I have separate bins for printed shirts, solid shirts, tank tops, printed pants, plain pants, skirts, dresses, swimwear, undershirts, leggings, and underwear.
To maximize closet space, start by using thin hangers that take up less space. Add another rod for hanging clothes to make use of vertical space. Use shelves or cubbies for folded items and bins. Hang hooks or organizers on the inside of the door for accessories or shoes.
Keep clothes you don’t wear often in bins under your bed. Regularly get rid of clothes you don’t wear anymore to free up space. Arrange your clothes by how often you wear them so everyday items are easy to reach. These tips will help you make the most out of your small closet space.
Another game-changer has been my laundry schedule. Setting aside dedicated time for laundry keeps me from falling behind on the dirty stuff.
By following these bedroom organization hacks, you can transform your bedroom into a neat, organized, and spacious retreat. Happy organizing!
