I absolutely love the fall, and with it now being August, it’s right around the corner. So it’s the perfect time to make our homes look and feel super cozy for fall. Even though we genuinely think a house should be cozy and joyful all year round, we can’t help but add a few fall-themed decorating ideas. Ultimately, adjusting a portion of your décor according to the season is a fun way to experiment with different color schemes, change things up, and rediscover your space.
In this post, we’ll cover some cozy fall decorating ideas to make your living room extra cozy this fall.
How to Make Your Living Room Cozy for Fall
You can change your home decor from summer to fall by adding some seasonal flowers around your house. I don’t use a lot of floral patterns in my home, but I love having a simple vase of sunflowers, fake pear stems, or dark-colored mums in my kitchen or dining room!
Another easy way to bring in the fall feel is by switching out your pillows and throws. Choose warm, cozy fabrics like flannel or knit in colors like orange, red, or brown. These small changes can make your home feel welcoming and ready for the cooler weather.
Cozy Fall Decorating Ideas for Living Room
1) Add Fall Colors and Textures
Transitioning to fall can be as easy as adding textures and warmer hues to your decor. Consider using wool or knitted throws, nubby textured pillows, and thicker fabrics like flannel. Mix in colors like cream, brown, rust, navy blue, mustard, and other autumn tones. Swap out curtains or artwork to complement these colors.
For that extra cozy touch, introduce flannel bedding as the weather cools down. Got a dark red blanket? An orange or yellow scarf you can use as a table runner? Old Dishes that are autumn colored works really well too!
2) Use Non-Artificial Decorations
Even though I like keeping things simple and tidy at home, I love decorating for fall, whether it’s with fake or real things. Lately, I’ve noticed that real dried leaves and preserved wheat look way better than the fake ones. You can find dried gourds and other cute décor pieces on Etsy.
It’s nice using real pumpkins for decoration because you don’t have to put them away after fall. But I still mix in fake decorations made of plastic or glass because they look so pretty too. It’s all about finding a balance between what’s easy and what looks good!
3) Scents can Make a Big Difference!
Sometimes, for me, it is as simple as getting a new autumn scented candle. Or autumn scented air fresheners. It’s usually a cheaper alternative. Also just moving more autumn colored elements into the room might help.
4) Shop Smart at the Dollar Store
Want to decorate for the fall but don’t want to spend lots of money? Head to your Dollar Store for cheap seasonal décor. Some of the stuff they sell is actually not bad, and you can’t beat the price!
Look for artificial leaves, small pumpkins, candles, and other festive accents that can add a touch of autumn charm without costing a fortune.
5) DIY Leaf Garland/ Wreath
Gather a variety of colorful leaves from your yard or a nearby park. String them together using twine or thread, alternating colors and shapes to create a natural and vibrant garland. Hang it along your mantel, staircase railing, or across a bare wall to bring a touch of outdoor beauty inside.
You can also get a Fall themed wreath to decorate your main door.
6) Pumpkin Centerpiece
Choose a variety of small gourds, ornamental squash, and pumpkins with different hues and forms. Arrange them creatively on a pretty tray or in a rustic wooden bowl. For an added touch of the season, add some pinecones or sprigs of fall foliage. Your coffee table or dining room table would look very pretty with this centerpiece.
7) Festive Throw Pillows
Update your living room decor by swapping out your regular throw pillows with ones that feature fall-themed patterns or colors. Look for pillows with plaids, leaf prints, or warm earth tones like burnt orange, deep red, or mustard yellow. These accents will instantly cozy up your seating areas and tie in with the autumn ambiance.
8) Seasonal Wall Art
Print out or create your own fall-inspired artwork. Look for printable quotes about autumn, watercolor paintings of pumpkins or fall foliage, or photographs of scenic autumn landscapes. Frame these pieces in simple, rustic frames or hang them with twine for a more casual look. Arrange them on your walls to add a seasonal touch and personalize your space with a warm autumn vibe.
9) Cozy Blankets in Fall Colors
Roll up a selection of soft, cozy blankets in different textures and autumn colors. Place them neatly in a large wicker basket or a rustic wooden crate near your sofa or armchair. This not only adds a decorative element to your room but also ensures that you and your guests have easy access to warmth and comfort during chilly fall evenings.
10) Nature-Inspired Candle Display
Create a pretty centerpiece using natural elements and warm lighting. Gather a large wooden tray or a shallow basket and fill it with a mix of pinecones, acorns, small branches with colorful leaves, and maybe some dried flowers or berries. Place a few pillar candles or tea lights among them – light them up for a warm, cozy glow in your living room.
11) Fall Decorating: Seasonal Book Nook
Pick out some fall-themed books with nice covers. Stack them neatly on a table or shelf. Add a small pumpkin or vase with dried flowers nearby. It’s a simple way to bring autumn charm and create a cozy reading spot.
When Should You Start Decorating for Fall?
The best option is to put up fall decor in September or October, once the weather starts changing. Avoid hanging fall decor any time before late August so your decorations can be in sync with the season. You’ll also want to avoid confusing holiday decor for fall decor.
From soft blankets and rustic accents to flickering candles and earthy tones, creating a cozy autumn atmosphere in our living rooms adds a comforting touch that makes home feel even more special during this time of year.
